2019 Angelica Organic Farm - FARM JOBS - Experienced Farm Hand to become Assistant Manager
Angelica Organic Farm is currently looking to add 1 hard working and capable farm crew member to start a.s.a.p.. We are seeking an experienced farmhand &/or assistant farm manager, who has what it takes to become our 2 I.C. in daily farm management alongside us, adding value to our current management scope and enabling us to share the load with someone motivated and responsible, who cares about food the farm and a job well done.
We are a small, diversified, certified organic and biodynamic vegetable farm located in Glenlyon (between Daylesford & Malmsbury/Kyneton). We are passionate about soil health, regenerative agriculture, agricultural policy, great food and our community. We enjoy growing produce for our 70+ member CSA, restaurants and produce shops in our region and Melbourne.
The role starts as a farm hand position (up to 1 week paid trial), then further trial towards becoming our assistant farm manager in 2020. It will require a hands on approach towards managing/overseeing all aspects of the farm, in partnership along side our owner/manager.
The successful applicant will participate in the daily farm operations including, but not limited to: seed sowing (minor), transplanting of seedlings, irrigation, weeding (mechanical and hand),greenhouse management (pruning/trellising, bed prep), weekly harvesting, post harvest handling, order and CSA share packing, record keeping, CSA distribution and local deliveries. Hours are full-time (37.5hours/week av.) to start a.s.a.p. as a farm hand. Work days - Monday to Friday for 2019. Medium to advanced entry level position (not beginner)
**We do not provide housing (or meals) at the farm. Farm crew members are responsible for securing their own housing outside of the farm (and within 30 mins drive of the farm) and must have reliable transportation to and from the farm.**
Qualifications: Due to the very demanding physical nature of farm work, comfort with kneeling, squatting, heavy lifting, and repetitive tasks is a must. Applicants will need to be able to lift 25kg and be able to work in all types of weather (sleet, heat, rain, wind, etc). Experience on a production farm is required.
*Please note: YOU must be available to begin work immediately & commit to staying through this growing season (ends last week of August 2019) THEN beyond if suitable for the 2 I.C. role. 3-4 weeks time off to be taken during September, when farm's closed . Depending on our production year, opportunity for work through some of September may be possible. Holidays and non-essential work absences can currently only be taken during September which is between growing seasons and thus quiet/minimal work needed - you agree to this on accepting an interview &/or job offer from us. Everyone has Christmas and New Year Public Holidays off and poss other public holidays, depending on work needing to be covered.
Other than certain public holidays NO additional ‘time off’ will be granted during Oct - late August (unless under extenuating and serious circumstances)
Provisions: Wet weather gear (over-pants, jacket) and work tools provided. Own gumboots required and essential – provided by you.
Mobile Phones: Use of personal mobile phones is restricted to break times only, unless an employee has an emergency situation that needs their response &/or they have sought permission to take/make calls/texts outside of break times.
NO SMOKING workplace: We have a zero-tolerance no smoking policy while anywhere on the property.
Zero Tolerance also for racism, homophobia, sexism, violence, disrespectful language and other negative behaviour in the workplace.
TO BEGIN Hourly Horticultural Award rate $23.66/hour, Casual. Plus super and fresh produce during CSA weeks
THEN A salary package commensurate w experience/ability will be negotiated for right person, once successful trial period concludes, prior to new season start. Excellent farm hands, with positive attitude are always welcome to stay on for the following season(s).
YOU MUST be/have...
Passionate about agriculture and have a positive attitude, mindful.
Strength and endurance
Contemplating or have started a career in farming/agriculture.
You are self aware and realistic about your work abilities and capacity to be an assistant manager
Have good communication skills. Comfortable asking questions, taking instruction, feedback and constructive criticism.
Team player but also able to work independently.
Ability to inspect, supervise, direct and monitor the work of casual farmhands during planting, harvesting and post harvest handling, order packing, ensuring tasks are completed efficiently and to the high standards required.
Responsible and very reliable.
Must have a good memory.
Self motivated, observant, quick on the uptake, good with deadlines and time management.
Enjoy out door, physical labour and getting hands dirty (and virtually everything else)
Valid drivers license and reliable, maintained transportation.
